A moral obligation

It must be groundhog day, no? It sure feels like it.

One paragraph on page 14 of the Throne Speech says:

The menace of drunk driving on our roads is one that can be difficult to curtail given the proliferation of alcohol versus our available enforcement resources. This Government will not tolerate impaired driving. Sobriety checkpoints and increased penalties will be implemented to reduce the number of people who drink and drive.

th

Mmmmm…. we’ve heard that how many times? If you read this, then you will see that it is quite a few, going back quite a few years.

Yet look at the stats on this video  imagine the resources that would be thrown at this if this many people had to go to hospital due to an illness. The EMT on this video even refuses to ride a bike, which tells its own story, doesn’t it?

People say it is the responsibility of the people to take greater care themselves and, yes, it is. But if they do not and if they continue to kill or maim themselves and others, then Government has to step in. That it was Governments do, that is their moral duty.

The fact that successive Governments have prevaricated over this issue and ignored there moral obligation is a national disgrace. The fact that organisations involved in trying to stem the flow of blood on the roads are chronically underfunded is also a  disgrace.

It is still early days for the new PLP Government but I have no faith that we will see anything meaningful ever being done to stop the murder on our roads.
