Update: I have just concluded an interview with Premier David Burt where I asked him about his pledge to introduce breathalysers this year. The Premier said he was referring to this Parliamentary year – so well will sit, wait and see.

As I walked to work this morning I was stopped by a PLP MP (who shall remain nameless) who proudly pointed out that the Government had successfully passed some major legislation on Friday.
The amendments to the Gaming Bill , the domestic partnerships amendments , the legalization of small amounts of cannabis and legislation on price controls all sailed through the House of Assembly.
I think I was expected to say well done – actually, the opposite happened, and I launched into a rant about Government priorities which, I think, took this particular MP by complete surprise such was the intensity of my feelings on this.
Where, I asked, when there have been 14 deaths on the roads so far this year (police predict at least one more death before Christmas) were Government’s priorities and why wasn’t the pledge to have road-side breath testing up and running before Christmas carried out?
What made the legalization of small amounts of cannabis more important than something that would help deter people from drinking and driving – risking death and injury not only themselves but other road users as well.
So here we are again – lots of words and absolutely no action. Talking the talk, but not even taking baby steps towards actually doing anything.
Last week the Minister went on record to say the deaths on the roads was a ‘crisis’, last Friday was the last sitting of the House until next year.
Island-wide there is outrage over the SSM Bill, there is condemnation of the gaming amendments but none of these are life threatening, the world will still go on turning, but for those grieving the death of a son, daughter, or friend, the world will stop and when it starts again, it will never be the same.
